Resonic is not a video player, but can play multichannel audio tracks contained in these video formats:

  • Standard MPEG-4 video files (.mp4 .m4v)
  • Microsoft Media Video files (.wmv)
  • Microsoft Video files (.avi) (only a few codecs are supported)

Slowdowns and Exclusions

Aside from potentially reporting false positives AV scanners can have a serious impact on Resonic’s startup speed or generally reduce the application’s performance. In extreme cases of bug-ridden AV engines startup might take between 15 and 30 seconds.

Make sure you always update your AV scanner to the latest version.

Adding an Exclusion

To avoid having Resonic reported as a false positive, or to generally improve its performance, you can go to your AV settings and add a so-called folder exclusion for your Resonic installation folder, which usually is C:\Program Files (x86)\Liqube.

Here are some instructions:

  • For Windows Defender on Windows 10 and 8
  • For Microsoft Security Essentials on Windows 7


To create a selection hold down ⇧ Shift, then click and drag the mouse in the waveform; clear the selection with ⇧ Shift+Right-Click.

The Keep Position feature () also applies to the current waveform selection, i.e. selections are maintained when switching the playing file.

The current mouse-selected region in the waveform is automatically saved before it is modified or cleared, which means it is not accidentally lost.
The last region can be restored by right-clicking the or buttons and selecting Restore last selection from the menu.
If a region already exists and a new one is created this feature toggles between the last one and the current one.
This feature is also available as a global hotkey.

Working with External Media Files

As you have learned, extracted files are stored in the Extracted Audio folder.
Simply dragging files into other applications might have different effects, depending on the application you are using:

Always collect files in other programs after you drag them into a project.

Most applications only reference external media files, and do not immediately make copies when saving the project.

In order to not lose extracted files when you transfer a project to a different computer, or when you want to send someone a project, you will have to manually collect these external files into your project, for which each application may offer a different function.

You should always do that, even if you’re importing files from external harddrives that are subject to change. This is important so you don’t have have missing files on your hand the next time you try to open the project on a different system, or after you do a manual cleanup.

Very few applications make copies of external media files automatically.

Some applications offer options to automatically create copies of external media files in the project folder.

Play your folders instantly
Resonic plays all your music and sound files directly out of your existing folder structures.
You are not forced to use any kind of library system. Since music libraries usually rely on tags they can easily end up being a confusing mess, unless these tags are maintained properly.
Many users do actually prefer to organize their music in folder structures, most commonly on external drives.
Browse your samples
For audio professionals it is vital to have a powerful preview tool at hand. Sample CD/DVD structures can be tedious to browse through. Even more so are sample libraries and collections as they tend to become huge fast.

To change pitch either use the two buttons (representing semitones and cents) — use Wheel, Left-Click and drag up or down, Right-Click for a menu, or Left-Click to reset.

For keyboard operation hold down Ctrl and press Num +, Num -, or Num * to reset.

Pitch-shifting, when active, is applied to all extracted audio.

Pitch-shifting is reset when you switch the playing file. To change this behavior right-click the buttons and select Remember pitch.


The level meter bars display both peak and RMS.

The top portion shows peak values and visualizes peak hold as well as post-decode clipping, i.e. compressed audio peaking above 0dBFS after decoding.

The bottom portion visualizes stereo phase correlation (mono compatibility) using a line that’s moving horizontally (left: -1, middle: , right: +1 being fully mono).


Creating Slices

To create temporary slice markers in the waveform hold Alt and Left-Click.Markers are currently not saved and will be lost once you change the playing file. Will improve in future updates.

Slices can be extracted to new audio files. Click the marker button () for additional options and features. See .

Mapping Slices to Keys

Slices can be mapped to keyboard keys (A..Z) for quick auditioning, which works particularly well when used with the pitch-shifting feature.
The keyboard layout can be changed from the marker menu to account for American, German, and French layouts.

During audio extraction conversion of sample rate, bit depth, and channel count is done on-the-fly and only when drag & drop extracting, and when extracting slices.

Extracting with Crop Buttons

Two crop buttons exist to extract the current to the current folder. The original sample format is retained, if possible.

  • to crop to the current folder
  • to crop to the current folder, then play the new file

Extracting with Drag & Drop

A little square appears in the lower right corner of , which can be dragged & dropped into the file list, browser folders, and any other application that accepts files.

When you’re trying to extract a long portion of audio content a progress indicator may appear in place of your mouse cursor. Do not release your left mouse button before the indicator has filled up, or else extraction is cancelled.

Changing the Extraction Format

The sample format can be changed via the Extraction format marker menu item.


Files and can be dragged & dropped from Resonic, into DAWs and video editing software, including their timelines, and into any other application or plugin that accepts files, for example:

Windows Explorer, Skype, Ableton Live, Steinberg Cubase, Image-Line FL Studio, Presonus Studio One, Bitwig, Adobe Premiere, Adobe After Effects, Magix Vegas, etc.

Here’s a summary of a few of the more notable features, aside from the regular bug fixes and usability improvements, in 0.9.3, 0.9.4, and beyond. With every release now we’re also working on migrating towards high-DPI, making sure that the UI looks and feels good on zoom or 4K screens. Community feedback is really helpful at that front.

We’re actively working on:

— Database functionality and search features (note that currently there is only a filter, i.e. it filters the file list based on filename or metadata, which is useful for refinement, but will eventually be improved by an actual indexed search)
— High DPI improvements
— New CPU/disk friendly peak cache
— Support for external editors and tools
— Non-blocking network support

Already implemented for upcoming 0.9.4 release:

— Extensive iXML 2.0 support, covering a big chunk of the specification
— Copy as Reaper media clip feature (in co-op with Cockos)
— Fast create selections (mouse click drag)
— Leading/trailing slice settings for slice export
— Explorer icon refresh for usability’s sake (incl. amb/bwf)
— Ambisonics detection, where possible, .amb file support
— Full multichannel ogg file support, including direct playback of .mogg files without having to split them up into channels first
— About 30 new metadata items being read and displayed
— Channel/track detection for formats that expose any usable metadata (e.g. WAVE/AIFF/AMB)
— Channel switcher bar (known in Soundminer as «leg picker») using aforementioned channel/track metadata, when available
— Metadata improvements for several mobile recorders (from Zoom to Sound Devices)

Added in 0.9.3:

— Several sound output related settings (rates, channel offset, exclusive mode, etc.)
— Any number of sampler loops (sustain/release) embedded in WAVE/AIFF metadata are visualized and can be used for snapping
— Improved filter (match all words, etc.)
— Several new metadata items and columns (from speeds and time signature to Soundminer, iXML, peak/gain values, etc.)
— Improved iXML/Soundminder metadata support
— Filename fix option for Unreal engine users

A word on Microsoft’s «Ransomware Protection» feature (or «Controlled folder access») introduced in Windows 10 Build 1803:

In theory it sounds pretty wonderful, in reality it is a nuisance in its current form and easily circumvented by ransomware. Worse though, it can prevent existing programs from accessing Documents, Desktop, and other folders and quietly fail without a desktop notification, so programs might seem broken. The «feature» can also seriously affect the startup speed of programs. The latest versions of Resonic are affected, but all versions of Resonic may as well be. If you experience ridiculously slow startup speeds (15+ seconds) or your preferences are not saved, try disabling ransomware protection. When in doubt add an exception for the installed Resonic.exe files (see screenshots).

You receive one or more Resonic Pro EA licenses, depending on the license model.

EA licenses are full and unrestricted Pro licenses. However, instead of being tied to update extensions they entitle you to free updates up to and including the major 1.0 release.

There is a new 32×32 icon set, and the tiny icons you typically get in Explorer’s ‘Details’ view become useful as they now share the same look and color scheme as Resonic’s file list. The little squares hint at the file’s content kind (lossless, lossy, music, video, or rex).

Minor design changes for the high-resolution Explorer icons.

Location bar that syncs to the browser and the current file, clickable, editable, might happen in some form.

The first Lab update in a while, but we have been very active these last months.
Here’s a small portion of the metadata supported by our stronger-than-ever Resonic Meta Core presented in the brand new meta panel coming to Resonic Pro 0.9.2.

Pro: Advanced track delay/minimum track length options currently in development that ensure a consistent delay/pause between individual files during playback, which is especially useful for previewing short to very short sound files.

New in 0.9: bigger, improved and restyled file list filter (with wildcard support, e.g., «k?ck*»).
The file list icons are crisper, high-dpi ready, and adjusted to the theme’s colors.

Set Loop Selection (Pro)

Available from Resonic Pro 0.9.

There are a couple of options available to create a loop selection for the track:

sets the left locator of the loop selection (always required end or length).

sets the right locator of the loop selection.

sets the loop duration (overrides the —loop-end option).

Values range from 0..1, i.e., 0-100% of the total track length.
If you append an s letter to a value it is interpreted as a seconds value instead.

To create a loop that starts at 50% of the total length and lasts for ten seconds:

Resonic.exe «full path to file» —loop-start=0.5 —loop-length=10s

To create a loop that starts at 10% and ends at 90% of the total length:

—loop-start=0.1 —loop-end=0.9

To create a loop that starts at 5 1/4 seconds in and ends at 12 1/2 seconds in:

—loop-start=5.25s —loop-end=12.5s

To create a loop for the whole track:

—loop-start=0.0 —loop-end=1.0    —loop-all

Note that this also works at runtime without specifying a filename, in which case Resonic Pro will modify the existing loop selection, for example:

False Positives

A so-called false positive is when a virus scanner wrongly reports a clean file as being suspicious or infected.

An AV scanner detects a file as packed when it recognizes the file as compressed or encrypted, and when it may not be able to unpack it. Unless this is true for multiple AV scanners and for the same file it does not mean much.

A generic or heuristic detection is merely a guess. The file in question may look “suspicious” to whatever algorithm or “artificial intelligence” is being employed. The metrics used by the AV software are kept secret, and legitimate software developers are left in the dark as to what caused the false positive in the first place. Many false positives fall into this category.

AV scanners these days also assign a “reputation” rating to files they encounter, with unknown files (e.g., a newly released update for Resonic) being less “reputable”. This is often marketed as “cloud protection”, or something to that effect. Behind the scenes this is part of a money machine that drives extended verification (EV) certificate sales. While EV certificates are costly and are said to «guarantee more reputable files» they do very little else for developers except quietly and effectively apply money extortion.

While we’re finishing up the 0.9.2 release, which is going to be a big feature and bugfix update for Resonic Pro, here’s a quick update:

Our discussion forums have been relocated to forums.liqube.com and reworked to use a dark and responsive design, and to be GDPR-compliant.

We now have a Slack workspace on slack.liqube.com where we post pre-release builds and chat with you directly.

Aside from that we’ve put Privacy Policy and ToS online (see website), and put an article up that clears up Antivirus-related misconceptions at resonic.at/docs/antivirus

Besides, Resonic Player will be updated as well.
