Version of the drivers? are you downloading the drivers from acer support?

  • mrchappers

I believe it is 18.1.2.1_W81x64. That is the file I downloaded direct from Acer support. For some reason this device setting tab is just not showing up for anything

Go to Control Panel, click Programs and see whether you have any ETD ware in there.

No ETD Ware in Programs. Tried talking to Acer tech support but it seems as if I need a higher level support which isn’t available until Monday.

I have exactly the same problem but with an E5-571. Acer support deny any knowledge of similar problems; and this is the second physical unit. Neither reinstalling the drivers or a factory reset (done as requested) made any difference.

I suspect that their master image, or however they deal with loading new systems, is rubbish (being kind)

I’m chiming in with the same issue.

I just purchased an Aspire E5-571-55TL from Best Buy — excellent computer, by the way — but it is frustrating me to no end that I cannot access the device properties for the touchpad.

This is definitely a problem that needs to be fixed! I used to love being able to have control over the touchpad gestures on my old Asus and I really want this functionality on my new computer.

This is truly the only rough spot for me on this excellent device. So frustrating.

Make sure that you don’t have ELAN touchpad, check in Device manager or look in Control Panel, Programs for ETDWare.

    Get the drivers from here:http://www.acer.co.uk/ac/en/GB/content/drivers

I just received my Aspire V3-572G today and I’m having the same problem.  I have tried reinstalling the drivers multiple times, using the driver from the offical synaptics website.. Nothing seems to work..

I have this same problem with my new R13.  I have tried to install drivers from various sources, to no avail.  Acer, why is there no Synaptics tab??

  • keith111

    Member Posts: 79 Troubleshooter

When the file is brought into the computer as «SAVED» option, it will go to the download file, still needing to be located and installed. The Synaptics touchpad controls in «Mouse>Device Settings>Setting» will appear when installed. Note the Synaptic file in «Programs/Synaptic», as well as in your «Device Manager>Mice and other pointing devices».

  • JustAlfo

That’s what is supposed to work, but it doesn’t.

Go to Control Panel —> Programs and Features and find Synaptic in the list. See if there is a conflict. Repair or reinstall.

  • shadyguido

    Member Posts: 5

I’ve discovered the problem: Acer’s new touchpad is a «Precision Touchpad» capable device made by synaptics. Thus the only adjustments available seem to be in the metro settings interface, and they are very sparse. It is still a synaptics device and the drivers still install, so there must be a way to expose the synaptics tweaks. Now what could that be…?Acer, couldn’t you have told us this already?

  • keith111

    Synaptic site:

  • JustAlfo

    Member Posts: 3

Yea that’s what I’ve found out as well. The driver just doesn’t work like a normal synaptics driver. I’ve returned the product already and I’m going to be going with a different company. I’ve been using Acer for over 10 years, I can’t believe they dropped the ball like this.

  • shadyguido

    Member Posts: 5

Yeah, this is awful.  Unless there is an Acer tech in here or another kind soul who can suggest a means of opting out of this precision touchpad nonsense and exposing the configuration options, I’m going to return my new R13 as well.

FAQ & Answers

Please let us know the correct model number or you may reinstall the touchpad driver from the recovery manager.

Here are the steps:

Press and hold the Windows key and then press the C key to open Charms.

Click on Search and type “Recovery”.

Click on ‘Gateway Recovery Management’.

Select Reinstall Drivers or Applications.

Select Content and choose the touchpad driver and proceed to install it.

I’m having the same problem here.. I bought this laptop about 1 month ago and the model is an Aspire E 15 E5-571-36ZV

I had the same problem on my new Acer V15. After much searching and trial and error I found out it’s a conflict based on the bios and how Windows 8.1 works. The chat help was no luck.

Plug your laptop in and go to the Accer support website. Dowloand the latest bios updates from the downloads/drivers section.. You must be plugged in to run the bios update Also go to Windows updates on your computer and see if there are any Intel or other Microsoft updates that are optional. Downloand and install those as well.

Do you think that this problem will be solved with the windows update to Windows10?

Mine is Aspire V11 Touch,12mths old Win8.1 and laptop lost the touchpad (no cursor at all) on resuming after hibernating. Connecting a mouse worked OK. Think it’s a Windows 8.1 issue as in Device Manager, Properties for the 12c-HID device (showing a ? query) the MSoft drivers were correct (2006) and ‘working properly.’ Turning touchpad on or off using function keys didn’t work, decided to remove the device altogether in Device Manager (If I was wrong, then surely MSoft would install on reboot) however the touchpad returned and so fixed the problem.

Synaptics pointing device driver

Synaptics Touchpad:

FAQ & Answers

You downloaded the driver here? :

You may have to restart your computer.

If that doesn’t work, you may have to update the BIOS on your computer. according to acer.

I have the same problem. Stopped working after I updated to windows 10. Have upgraded with the latest drivers, but that didn’t fix it. I have Acer Aspire S7-392.

I had exactly the same problem. I managed to solve it partiallly by downloading the Synaptics touchpad driver (Windows 10, 64-bit version). Follow these steps to “partially” solve the issue. Only pointing works now, and the buttons are still inacctive.

2- Restart your laptop. If the problem is solved, you’re good to go. If not, do the following:

3- Search for (Mouse & Touchpad settings) in the Start Menu and click on it.

4- Scroll all the way down and click on “Additional mouse options”. A new winodow (Mouse Properties) with several taps will open.

5- Click on the rightmost tap called (ELAN).

6- Select “E-Lan Smart-Pad” from the “Device” box.

7- Click on “Enable Device”.

8- If checked, uncheck “Disable when external USB pointing device plug in”

9- Then click on “OK”

As I said in the beginning, this only solved my problem partially. I am still not able to use the buttons on the touchpad, only pointing works.

I have the same model and the same problem. I’ve tried installing Synaptic drivers (and then rolling back to Windows-approved) but that doesn’t work. I’ve tried updating HID device drivers and that doesn’t work. I’ve reinstalled Windows, and nothing.

Sorry, I didn’t answer your question exactly — It works in basic mode, but with no features — just point/click, no scroll or gestures. It doesn’t work at all in advanced mode. The oddest thing is that it worked for a couple days (in advanced) after I updated to the latest BIOS, then stopped working (in advanced).

Go to the device BIOS (F2 key when turned on), on the Main tab, switch the TouchPad item to Advance.

If the item is missing, press the combination CNTRL + S on the MaIN tab.

Surprising me they thought never even popped into my head. Not that it would have mattered or changed anything because carrying around a wireless mouse around with a laptop would be a major PITA. I just don’t understand why after months of beta testing they didn’t discover and work together to find a fix for this issue.  It’s not just Acer having touchpad issues after installing the Windows 10 Update.  So this should have been found durng beta testing and fixed prior putting it out for the masses  to download and use.

You can prevent Win10 from upgrading a specific driver, see the fairly well hidden topic on https://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/insider/forum/insider_wintp-insider_update/how-to-block-automatic-reinstall-of-a-driver-or/bff07224-4ce2-4b42-ab29-68c3a305d730

I followed that troubleshooter and prevented the Elan touchpad driver from being updated. Seems to work fine.

I installed the Win 8.1 driver available from Acer for my model (Aspire V5-122P) and it works fine, touchpad scrolling is back.

I have an Acer Aspire One netbook and after upgrading to windows 10 the edge scroll wouldn’t work. I set it to do 2 finger scrolling and that worked… for a while. Then it seemed I couldn’t scroll with 2 finger in Chrome. Today I found a simple solution; so simple I bang my head for not trying it. In ELAN Smart Pad control panel I disabled both horizontal and vertical scroll, and then renabled. It works again! Thank you SeijuroRen on the MS boards

I have also had to use a much firmer tap on the pad to click, and that seems to be all better now as well! Whew!

AND THEN RESTART THE LAPTOP OFCOURSE

Synaptics TouchPad.

I am guessing bios is current and not the source of this. If so next I would manually over ride that driver with the other. Download the correct one. Open the zip. Open the exe with say zip7. Use those extracted files from the exe to manually select for use in the device manager. Update driver, manual, have disk, browse to unzipped location, use and when windows objects say use anyway.

If this fails next would be to try unrelated drivers and force them in similar fashion like use synaptics touchpad drivers and see if one of those will play nice. Last solution or idea would be to mechanically swap touchpad for another kind from junk system or cheap keyboard.

In end it’s a driver issue. Should be able to force install proper one and set to never update but manually.

I have seen others have changed bios and it helped them the issue I have us I am using a laptop which isn’t supported in windows 10 (only found this out recently) although it worked without issue for years on 10 only recently I got this error and now for the life of me can’t find a fix. I checked the Dr drivers for bios on acer site for my model and they only have for windows 8 so I was scared to change this. It may help bit not being tech savvy on such areas I fear doing this blindly. I tried to download an alps touchpad driver but this done nothing. I also seem people recommend trying it in «dependability mode» (i know that’s not the correct name but can’t remember at this moment the correct name for it) but when I click properties there is no such option. Tbh the more I try to fix this the more confused I am getting. Would there be any way you can post me an idiots guide for any suggestions you may have. I was hoping there would be another touchpad make that I could just install driver for then that would overwrite the elan one. Even if I had to render touchpad useless and use an external mouse for future that wouldn’t bother me at all but at the moment it doesn’t seem like I can even do that as Windows seems to update the elan driver itself which is a nightmare. Really appreciate your help and if you can’t reply with more dimple instructions then that’s more problem at all as u realise this could be an annoyance to you. Once again thanks for your reply and suggestions.

Yea, I got a easy temp fix. Unplug it. There will be a thin ribbon connector coming from it to mother board. Driver won’t load without it seen in hardware then your external mouse will work.

More detailed fix can do but I need time to make it up. Need too account for bsod so you can even make the fix

So long work day done. More info for your repair. My reading says if you press shift key and hold and also press f8 this should boot system into safe mode (both win8 & Win10). Would like to know if you can run system in this mode without the bsod you have been experiencing.  Safe mode basically runs windows with the most basic of drivers so the touchpad should not cause issue but be advised this mode also means basic vga graphics and other features. If this mode works we can proceed to replace the driver. Let me know.

hi again and thanks for reply yet again. i have resorted to just taking out the ribbon for the touchpad and doing without it. i read a forum with various fixes but i couldnt do any of them, i have deleted elan from laptop but when i redownloaded it i couldnt seem to enable it in any way (tried fn+f7)and the setting tab for elan was there but everything was greyed out and i couldnt select anything. seems i am not installing eln properly or something and im not sure why this is happening, anyway i havent had bsod even before doing this, i got problem when i loaded windows this morning and was asked if i wanted to restore i just went to advanced options then went to exit to windows 10 and it launched without error. i have since took out the ribbon connection for the touchpad so hopsully that will prevent the problem from occuring again. not the greatest solution really but i seem to have a working computer at least for now. pity i have lost various pps i had downloaded etc but i can get them back somehow im sure. thanks for your reply and i will get back to you i have any more issues or if i find a proper fix. thanks for your time though really appreciated
